Tips To Keep Your Electronics Safe During Relocation/How To Pack Electronics While Moving

How many times did you have packing and moving experiences that can be described as nice? Let’s admit it packing while relocation is a daunting task and requires our time and efforts to get things right.

In today’s times, relocating to a new city is a major task thanks to the number of material possessions we live with. Though we love our materials from furniture to electronics, we get concerned when we are about to move to another city and the packing and moving isn’t mostly a nice experience. Apart from antiques and family photos, we love our electronic gadgets and cannot bear the slightest damage occurring to them. Damage to electronics isn’t always about loss of money alone but also about the loss of data. Let us help you with a few easy tips that will make packing electronics for moving easier and damage free.

How not to mess up the cords:

While you are packing, think about unpacking! When you would be unpacking, the most tedious part is to get the cords right. So, it will be sensible of you to pack them up in a way that you are able to differentiate them and fix them in the right sockets in order to avoid any confusion. There’s a tip to make this task easier. Use different colored tapes for each cord and it’s corresponding socket. This is how you pair up the cord and the socket and it couldn’t get easier to distinguish. If there are long wires/cables, make sure you shorten the length by tying them up with a rubber band or string. You won’t have to go through de-tangling the cords while unpacking.

How to protect the screens:

Let’s admit, the screens are the most precious part of our gadgets. Electronic lovers leave no stone unturned to protect the screens. However, not many know the right way to pack the screens to  avoid even the slightest scratch. Here’s a tip. The screens should not be kept in direct touch with the box package. Between the screen and the package, there should be sufficient amount of padding preferably of thermocol or bubble wraps that prevents the screen from any sort of scratches and damage.

While carrying this package should be kept upright. In any other way, it is likely to suffer damage. Nothing should be placed above this as it can’t hold any weight.

How to secure your data:

It is always wise to be ready with back up. In order to save your data from any damage or loss, either back it up or if there is a removable hard desk, store it separately. Remove any loose storage devices like CD, DVD pen drives etc.  You can also use the cloud to store data which is the most reliable way.

How to ensure suitable temperature:

As electronic devises are sensitive to temperature, one should be careful about the temperature during the transportation. High temperature is not suitable for the devises and can also harm them. So, the place of storage and transport should be low temperature in order to avoid any damage. If the transport is across varying temperatures, heat insulators can be used.

Remove the Batteries:

It is very important to remove batteries from the electronics while moving, in case you didn’t know this already. Batteries are susceptible to leakage during temperature variations and so it is a wise move to remove them and store them separately so that if they leak out, the battery compartments are left dry and undamaged. If the compartments get affected, it could prevent the devices to function properly.

Why you should store them outside the devices is that they do leak in both cases, but take more time when they are outside.

Things to avoid

Don’t use packing chips/peanuts

Packing chips or peanuts are quite a hassle to use. They produce static electricity and stick to anything when unwrapped. Instead using bubble wrap is a better option.  Bubble wraps are anti static, can take any shape, protects the item effectively and can is quite easy to reuse.

Don’t use newspapers to pack screens

Since, newspapers are easily available in houses, you might find them tempting to use for packing. However, the surface of the newspapers is not soft enough to protect your screens. It is rather hard and does not protect it from damage. Using softer tissues/bubble wrap is important in this case. Besides, this there are chances that due to friction and clamminess, the ink of the newspaper might stain the screen.

Don’t leave your laptop/computers without password

Not setting passwords for your devices is equal to leaving the data inside open to be accessed. It’s important that you set different passwords for each of the devices and secure the data.

Don’t pack more than one device in a box

Don’t act miserly when it comes to packing your devices. Use appropriate boxes and materials as well for each device and pack them up conveniently.

Don’t ignore the user manuals

User manuals are not only important but can come handy at unexpected times. Try not to keep them too far from the devices they belong to or else pack them all together according to convenience.

Tips to unpack the devices

Just as you should know how to pack your electronic devices, you should know how to unpack them as well and to get them ready for use.

Treat your gadgets as the first thing on the list to unpack. Begin with the unwrapping and disposing off of the packing material. Let your devices acclimate to the new temperature for few hours. Ensemble the accessories, cords, remote control etc and get the gadgets ready to be turned on.

Keep the reference/user manual at hand and with it’s help get the gadgets ready and rocking!

When packed right, nothing can go wrong with your electronic devices. It is important to be well informed about the nature of devices and the best practices rather than being completely dependent on external services.
